How to Tell if ChatGPT Wrote It

It’s not too challenging to spot content written by GenAI, particularly when the ChatGPT model tends to output common recognizable phrases. Here are some solid indicators I’ve observed which suggest copy was not completely written by an actual human writer:

  • In the realm of…
  • Ever-evolving landscape, the current landscape, the digital landscape, an ever-evolving world…
  • Delve/delved into
  • Embrace, discover, immerse yourself
  • Navigate, fostered
  • Embark on this journey
  • “Join us in this journey”
  • “Let’s work together to…”
  • “A beacon of light”
  • Fostering community
  • Elevate your _______
  • Unlock your potential, Unlock the secrets to…
  • Unleash, redefine
  • Supercharge, elevate
  • ______’s got you covered!
  • Is a testament to…
  • ‘Single quotes’ around terms
  • Overuse of emojis 🚀
  • #HashtagWithNoFollowing

Seeing these phrases overused makes me consider the impact of GenAI on communication. It’s been just one year since OpenAI’s ChatGPT was first released to into the public domain and every day, I see more and more glaring examples of generated copy. My inbox is littered with B2B spam but it’s about to get flooded with reductive calls to action. Over the last few months, I’ve noticed lengthy, paragraphs-long LinkedIn posts published by connections that previously wrote only short sentence fragments. Seemingly overnight, their posts are now organized into neat paragraphs, each led by a representative emoji. Others share lengthy, repetitive articles that make me question if they actually wrote a word of it.

Earlier this year during an episode of the Ezra Kline show podcast, Jonathan Franco describes a boring AI apocalypse scenario where,
We use chat GPT to generate long emails and documents [from a few bullet points], and then the person who receives it uses chatGPT to summarize it down to a few bullet points. And there’s tons of information changing hands, but all of it is just fluff. We’re just inflating and compressing content generated by AI.

This scenario mirrors past technological advancements that have both aided and hindered our capabilities. For instance, when Microsoft introduced spell check into a Word processor, then editors and writers could operate at a higher level. It gave the great creators the capacity to be even greater. There was a flip side: many people have grown so reliant on their phone or laptop that their own spelling or grammar has atrophied, and they can hardly spell without autocorrect.

Here’s my attempt to stitch together all the expressions over-generated by ChatGPT into a single (in)coherent message:
